Named after the nation’s third president, Jefferson County is located in the eastern
panhandle of West Virginia and bounded by the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers. Residents

Known as the gateway to the Shenandoah Valley, Berkeley County is the second oldest
county in West Virginia. Many Civil War relics and historic buildings from the 17th

The Main Street program in Martinsburg, the county seat, has attracted many new
residents and businesses to the revitalized downtown area. The Arts Centre in Martinsburg
hosts the popular West Virginia Wine and Arts Festival. The Apollo Civic Theatre
opened in 1913 and continues to serve county residents and visitors with wonderful
plays and musicals.
Berkeley County is growing and leads the state in population growth. The historical

Situated equal distance between the nation’s capital and Pittsburgh, Morgan County
is the westernmost county in West Virginia’s panhandle region. Historical sites
here include the Morgan County Public Library which is housed in a Victorian home
built in the 1800s. Don’t let the county’s small town atmosphere fool you though.
Many big city amenities are available in this charming area.
The county’s signature Ice House was built in 1910 as a storage facility. Today
it is home to the Morgan Arts Council and attracts a variety of artists and community
programs throughout the year. Morgan County is also home to Berkeley Springs, known
for its natural springs and dubbed the country’s first spa. Over at Cacapon State
Park, a golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones is a main attraction for residents

outdoor photographers. Mineral County is also home to Fort Ashby, the only remaining
structure in a chain of forts established by George Washington in West Virginia.
Education is important in Mineral County. The public school system has a very low
dropout rate, and Potomac State College of West Virginia University offers a small
college atmosphere with the prestige of a larger university.
